Scenic Shimla, the biggest hill station of the world is perched at a height of 2,100 meters. The stunning beauty and charm of Shimla was discovered by a British officer, Lt. Rose, during the Gorkha war and was named after the temple of Goddess Shamla, which was situated here amidst thickly wooded forest. Shimla became the favourite hill resort of the British and also the summer capital of India during the British Raj.
The Ridge:
This large open space in the heart of the town is a popular site as all the tourists converge here, while taking leisurely walks through the mall and Lakkar Bazar. Visitors relax here and enjoy the scenic beauty and charm.
Christ Church:
The ‘icon’ of Shimla is ser on the edge of the Ridge. It is noted for Neo-Gothic architecture and historical value. The new-Tudor library building is also worth seeing.
The Mall Road:
It is the main shopping area of the town and is also dotted with fine eating out places. The Gaiety Theatre here is a replica of an old British theatre and is the cultural hub of Shimla. No vehicular traffic is allowed on the Ridge, mall road and Lakkar bazaar. A passenger lift run by HPTDC links the Cart road and mall road.
Lakkar Bazaar:
It lies near the Ridge and is popular for wooden articles and souvenirs. The Roller Skating Rink here is also visited by the tourists.
Kali Bari Temple:
It lies near the Scandal point towards General Post Office. An idol of Goddess Shamla is enshrined here.
Jakhoo Temple (2.5 kms):
The Lord Hanuman shrine is set atop the Jakhoo Hill (2455 meters), the height peak of Shimla and its surrounding.
State Museum (3 Kms):
It lies on the western edge of the town and exhibits ancient sculptures and ‘Pahari’ miniature paintings of the state.
Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (4 kms.):
It is housed in the old Viceregal Lodge, the most impressive colonial building. The building was built in 1888 and was the summer seat of British government till 1940s. The lush lawns and gardens add to the beauty of this historic site.

Rampur was the capital of the erstwhile Bushahr state and is also known for the famous Lavi trade fair held in November. Other attractions are – Dumgir Buddist Temple, Padam Palace, Raghunath temple, Ayodhya Temple, Ayodhya temple and Narsingh temple.

The beautiful ‘gateway to Kinnaur’ is 176 kms. from Shimla. The majestic Bhimakali temple set amidst mighty mountains is revered by the Hindus and Buddhists. A Pheasant Breading Centre and stadium are also worth seeing.

It is 104 kms. from Shimla on the Shimla-Rohru highway and is known for the ancient temple of Mata Hateswari on the banks of river Pabber.
