Una district was carved out of Kangra district on 1st Sept., 1992. The district has fairly developed industrial sector. Mehatpur, Gagret, Tahiwal and Amb are main industrial centres. Una was connected by gauge railway line on 11th Jan 1991.

Una:

The historic town near the Swan River, a tributary of Satluj is an important commercial and trading centre. Una finds mention in the ‘Aainey Akbari’ a historical treatise of Mughal period. It is also the home of famous Bedi family, whose ancestor Baba Kaladhari, a descendant of Guru Nanak settled here. A large number of devotees gathered here to losten Baba Kaladhari’s discourses on the holy Guru Granth Sahib. The sacred Gurudwara Baba Sahib Singh ji Bedi overlooking the valley is very popular among pilgrims.

Bangana - Lathian – Piplu:

The area on the Una Barsar Hamirpur Road is noted for its scenic cham and religious sites. Piplu perched atop Sola Singh Shar affords panoramic view of the Gobind Sagar.

Chintpurni Temple:

This major pilgrim centre of Himachal is located on Dharamshala – Hoshiarpur road about 52 kms. from Una. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Durga (Bhagvati) as Chhinmastika – the headless form in which she killed demon Nishumbh. According to a legend, the Goddess appeared in the dream of a brahmin Mal Das and asked him to built a temple for her over here. She also told that anyone who worshipped her with complete devotion would be relieved of all the worldly worries and tensions. Thos the presiding deity came to be known as ‘Chintan Purni Devi’ (Goddess relieving one of all worries) or Chintpurni Devi. The Goddess is worshipped here in the form of a ‘Pindi’ (stone).
A large number of devotees attend the main fair held during the first 10 days of “Shukalpaksh” in August. Maximum attendance is on the 8th day of the celebration. Fairs are also held during the Navratras.

Around Chintpurni

Dharamshala Mahanta:

This matha of priory was set up by Baba Nakodar Dass during the rule of Mughal emperor Akbar. A large number of devotees visiting Chintpurni temple come here and pray. It is also noted for fine murals and wall paintings.

Gagret:

It lies on the Hoshiarpur – Dharamshala road, about 40 kms. from Una and 20 kms. from Chintpurni. Legends suggest that the Shiv Bari here was the archery practicing range of the students of Guru Dronacharya. It is believed that the temple of Lard Shiva here was built by Dronacharya for his daughter Jayati. The sacred site is surrounded by thick forest. A large number of devotees come here during the months of July / August.

Mairi:

The small village in Amb tehsil is famous for the Dera Baba Gurbarbhag Singh gurudwara. It lies just 3 kms. north-east of Nehri on the Una – Amb – Nadaun – Hamirpur road about 40 kms. form Una. This important gurudwara set atop a hill amidst eucalyptus trees is associated with Baba Gurbarbhag Singh, the son of Baba Ram Singh, a descendant of Dhir Mal, the first cousin of Guru Gobind Singh. He was born in 1715 and succeeded to the hereditary gaddi (religious seat) of Sodhis of Kartarpur. After the invasion of Ahmad Shah Abdail on Punjab, the Guru Shifted to Mairi.
It is said that he meditated here under a ‘ber’ tree, which was inhabited by Nar Singh and also attained great spiritual powers. He treated patients possessed by evil-spirits and even today a large number of devotees visit the shrine to get relieved from the evil spirits and talking the blessings of Baba Gurbarbhag Singh ji.
A large ten day fair is held during the festival of Holi (Feb. / Mar.). Patients suffering from mental problems and possessed by evil spirits are cured during this time.

Nari:

It is 19 kms. from Una, near village Basal on the Una – Amb road. Nari is famous for Dera Baba Rudru, established by Baba Rudranand, said to be part of Lord Shiva. People bitten by snakes are said to be cured here with the blessings of the Baba ji.
